Overview
Within a single 500-metre radius, Sarajevo's Old Town holds mosques, churches, a synagogue, Ottoman bazaars, and Austro-Hungarian architecture — all still in daily use, all within walking distance of each other. Starting at the Latin Bridge — where the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 triggered World War I — the route moves through Baščaršija's old bazaar, along Coppersmith Street, past the Sebilj Fountain, through the Gazi Husrev-Bey Mosque complex, and on to Sarajevo Cathedral and the grand City Hall. You will cross the exact line where the Ottoman East meets the Austro-Hungarian West — one of the most quietly remarkable moments on any walking tour in Europe.
