Overview

For most people, Nuremberg is known from the Nazi era, as the city of the Nazi Party rallies. Today the Old Town looks medieval, but behind that look lies a history of almost 1,000 years, and much of what you see was rebuilt after World War II ended in 1945. On this private walk I tell you how the city came to be, what is still original from the Middle Ages, and how the Nazis rose to power in Nuremberg and shaped everyday life.

I'm Hermann and grew up in Nuremberg. I study history and English for a teaching degree and will start a PhD in history soon. So far I have led more than 150 tours in Nuremberg, for about 1,100 guests. As a historian, I connect today's buildings with the people who lived in them. Historical photos show what is original and what was reconstructed.

I always shape the tour around your wishes and help with your trip planning. From the moment you book, I am reachable and usually reply the same day.

Altes Rathaus

We begin at the Old Town Hall, seat of the council of the Free Imperial City. Its oldest part, the Gothic hall, dates from 1332 to 1340. Right next to it stands St. Sebald, the parish church of the northern half of the city, named after the city's patron saint, whose life is known mostly from legend. Historical photos show what the Old Town looked like before 1945.

Hauptmarkt

Around 1250 this ground next to the Pegnitz river was filled in so that people could build on it. A Jewish quarter with a synagogue grew up here, and in the early 14th century the community was one of the largest in the Holy Roman Empire. In 1349 the quarter was destroyed in a pogrom, and hundreds of people were murdered. The city council had asked King Charles IV in advance to approve this. The houses were torn down, and the city laid out the Hauptmarkt and the Obstmarkt in their place. The Frauenkirche was built on the site of the synagogue. In 1933 the Nazis renamed the square Adolf-Hitler-Platz and used it for marches during the Party Rallies. On 2 January 1945 an air raid destroyed most of the Old Town, and I show photos of the square before and after.

Hangman's Bridge

We reach the Henkersteg and the Henkerhaus, where the city executioner lived for centuries. A first wooden footbridge stood here in 1457. The covered bridge you see today dates from the 1950s, after the war destroyed its steel predecessor of 1879. Why the bridge carries the executioner's name is still debated, and I tell you what we know and what we do not. From here you get one of the best views along the Pegnitz.

Kettensteg

The Kettensteg is a pedestrian suspension bridge over both arms of the Pegnitz. Before it, a wooden footbridge of the tanners stood here from 1441. The city of Nuremberg calls it the oldest surviving iron suspension bridge on the European continent. Its iron chains and hangers from 1824 are still original, the pylons and the deck were renewed later.

Weissgerbergasse

The Weißgerbergasse is named after the tanners who lived here in the Middle Ages and grew wealthy from their trade. The city's tourism office calls it the largest ensemble of old craftsmen's houses in Nuremberg.

Tiergärtnertorplatz

The pointed-arch Tiergärtnertor was built in the second half of the 13th century. Around 1545 it was walled up and a larger gate was built next to it. The name comes from the game park of the burgrave in the moat below the castle. On the square stand the Dürer House and the Pilatushaus of 1489. Below the castle I show you the house at Obere Schmiedgasse 54. Built in 1338, it is described as the oldest half-timbered residential house in Nuremberg.

Kaiserburg Nurnberg

The tour ends at the Imperial Castle, high above the Old Town. Many emperors of the Holy Roman Empire held court here. From the Freiung you look out over the roofs of the whole Old Town and see how the city grew around the castle rock.
