As one of the seven churches addressed in the Book of Revelation, the city of Pergamum was the core of a vast kingdom in the Hellenistic era that maintained its status as a political and cultural leader into the Byzantine period. Its Acropolis, which rises 1300 feet above the lower city located on the plain of the Caicus River, is a must-see with its monuments and constructions dating back to the Hellenistic Age.Asklepion and discover one of the earliest known medical complexes dedicated to the god of health, Asklepios, son of Apollo. The treatment techniques used by the famous doctor Galenos here, including healing water, mud cure, sports, theater psychotherapy, are considered as the very foundations of modern medicine.
